Messy Minecart

Skills Used: LUA, 1 Bit Graphic Design, Game Design

The Panic Playdate is a small yellow mobile game console developed by Panic Inc. The console is designed to be a very simple and niche gaming device that is easy to get into development of software for. Messy Minecart is my first game for the Playdate device. The game is simple, using the crank on the side of the device, the player moves a minecart back and forth trying to catch fruit. As time goes on, more fruit is introduced, and the falling speed increases, providing a challenge. The game keeps a score and even saves a high score into the internal memory of the device. This game was written entirely in LUA, and was so simple it only consisted of 400 lines of code. Even more interesting, the Playdate console has a MIP (Memory In Pixel) display with only black and white monotone output. This means that Messy Minecart required clever art design working with only black and white.

The game is published to Itch.io under a Panic Playdate game tag. If you own a Panic Playdate, or are simply interested in the game, it can be found at: https://barycentergames.itch.io/messy-minecart
